Through Our Eyes Education Salon Series

Over the past four years, Through Our Eyes has developed an experienced team of Teaching Artists with a passion to instruct teens about creativity. The TOE Education Salon series creates a platform for TOE Teaching Artists and frontline educators to share ideas and experiences. During the event, our Teaching Artists download the teaching tools designed by TOE for Hong Kong youth, and share the creative work of past participants. The first Education Salon-cum-Through Our Eyes My Light book launch, held on May 24 2009, attracted many educators. Workshops with specific themes are scheduled to take place in October and November 2009.

Through Our Eyes: My Light

As one of our Through Our Eyes students attests, “Photography gives us a brand new vision; the world, as seen through the lens and our own eyes, has become totally different.” Through Our Eyes: My Light is the fruit of student participants' creativity and sensibility. It includes over 100 images accompanied by text and nine innovative and practical teaching tools to bring photography into classroom or home. Please click here for details.

Photography is one of the most popular and prevalent ways to document the world around us. The accessibility of this medium, paired with the illuminating power of creative writing, allows young people to observe and reflect upon their lives and the world around them. They can share their personal stories, both through the lens and through their own eyes, interpreting life with a candid, revealing sensibility.

It includes over 100 images accompanied by text, the result of students’ journeys of self exploration through light and shadow, and creative writing. The book is divided into four sections: I Am; Coming Home; Reflections and My Light. The book also features nine innovative and practical teaching tools to bring photography into classroom or home, inspiring a love of photography in the whole class or family.

Through Our Eyes x AiR

International Exchange, Local Reconstruction

Collaborating with AiR Association's Hong Kong International Artists' Workshop 2008, a Foundation funded programme, two visiting artists shared their work and artistic experiences with over 40 Through Our Eyes students and veterans. They were India’s Abhinandita Mathur, an Indian photo-journalist with a strong interest in social issues,” and Michelle Brand, a British eco designer. Guided by Through Our Eyes teaching artists John Fung, Venus Lo and Wong Suk Ki, participants explored their own communities through lenses, capturing cluttered markets and forgotten corners. Through photo montage and working with found objects, students deconstructed and reconstructed their journey through the communities with heightened awareness and creative responses.
