The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Gallery of Buddhist Sculpture at the Victoria and Albert Museum

The first gallery for Buddhist sculpture in the United Kingdom, the
Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Gallery displays highlights from the Museum’s world class collection of Buddhist sculpture.

Around 50 sculptures created by master craftsmen between A.D. 200 and 1850 are shown in the new gallery to explore how the Buddha has been represented in Asian art. The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Gallery tells the story of the life of the Buddha and the spread of Buddhism from India to other parts of Asia. The sculptures are arranged in geographic groupings, demonstrating the diversity of artistic expression throughout Asia. It also reflects the differing Buddhist practices of India, Sri Lanka, the Himalayan cultures, Burma, Java, Thailand, China and Japan.

The Gallery includes an interactive display to explain the gestures and poses used in Buddhist sculpture. Two films are available for screening. One focuses on the ancient Buddhist monasteries of Ajanta in central India and Tabo in Tibet, and the other explores contemporary Buddhist practice in the Indian Himalayas.

The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Gallery was unveiled on April 29, 2009, coinciding with the cultural events of The Many Faces of Buddhism presented by the Foundation.
