A non-profit photographic project on its own,
Through Our Eyes aims to promote arts education among the youth community, to nurture their creativity and their powers of expression, and to bring a fresh and youthful eye to Hong Kong. A detailed education curriculum in photography was developed for the project. This includes workshops and a two-day shooting trip in October 2005, placing digital cameras in the hands of 172 Form 2 students for practice, with the guidance of professional photographers and art teachers. The students reflected their impressions and observations of the places, people, events and make-a-living scenes they saw onto photographs, depicting sensitive images of their ideas about life and their views of the world around us. A total of 65,000 photographs were received. Outstanding works from the students were selected by the editing panel, formed by professional photographers and arts educators. Selected works of the students are now exhibited, and a high quality book is published in Hong Kong in appreciation of their outstanding efforts and creativity.
Ms. Mandy Chow, Programme Manager of The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation, remarked on this project, “Given the opportunity and the right direction and guidance, the power of creativity found in the youth goes beyond our imagination, and the conventional eyes of our society. They can always project the most straightforward impressions on what is happening in the world around them into all sorts of visual sensibilities. We are very proud of their achievements.”
The images to be showcased in the photo exhibition demonstrate the subtle temperaments and strength of character of Hong Kong found in the eyes of the young students. The naked soul of Hong Kong in the youth’s eyes can be found in a children’s playground, a boutique in Central, a family eating in a restaurant, or a simple gaze into the sky.
The exhibition captures the quality works of 172 Form 2 students from 97 local schools in the following eight categories, namely “My World”, “Our Natural World”, “Eyes of the Heart”, “Abstract Eye”, “Society’s Mirror”, “Signs of the Times”, “My Roots” and “The Face of Hong Kong”. The recently published book of photographs, will be available in bookstores and the exhibition for HK$260 each. Proceeds from the book sale will go to the funding of future arts education projects supported by the Foundation.
