The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation
proudly presents
City Kiss: A selection of student photography
and writing showcased
in a miniature metropolis in Times Square

Embracing the community, the city
and the voices of young people

A homage, an investigation, a love letter to the city we call home: Through the photography and words of young people, this multi-media exhibition offers fresh, revealing perspectives that will change the way we see and experience Hong Kong life, and the people we share it with.

The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation is thrilled to present the City Kiss outdoor exhibition in Times Square, 7th-19th October. On display are student works from the Through Our Eyes (TOE) in-schools photography programme from the academic year 2007-2008. Over 500 Form 1-4 students from 24 schools worked with our dedicated team of teaching artists to create these stunning artworks.

The objective of this exhibition is to provide teenagers with a wide platform to express their thoughts to the public through photography and creative writing. By presenting the city through the vision of these young artists, City Kiss also encourages the public to take a closer look at the city they live in as they wander through the miniature metropolis of the exhibition.

During the exhibition, a large-scale city model will be built at the Times Square Open Plaza, featuring densely arranged model buildings of varying heights, the tallest at 3 metres. This miniature metropolis mirrors the city environment we are living in—a semi-enclosed space both intimate and intriguing. Stepping into the streets of this reflected city, wandering through the densely packed buildings, viewers are welcomed by a gallery of photography and text, displayed in slideshows, projections and billboards. Some works glimpse out from tiny windows of buildings, inviting viewers to explore deeply and freely within this space: a calm oasis from hectic urban life.

The artworks in this exhibition offer reflections on the city and society, investigating themes of identity, community and the environment. Their images and words not only help viewers gain a better understanding of young people, they offer unique portraits of our society, posing questions towards our behaviour, achievements and contributions within it. Hopefully the exhibition will both rejuvenate viewers’ imagination, and inspire them to “kiss” our city from their hearts.

Ms Zhou Ru-Jün, TOE Programme Director:

“Whenever we kiss something, whether it is a person, a pet, or even just a doll, we need to have a certain passion, association or memory towards the object of our kiss. The student works from the TOE programme are in fact the traces left by teenagers “kissing the city”: a symbol of their sentiment and passion. It has to be noted that the thoughts and behaviour of teenagers are all created in a city that is built up by adults. Therefore, there is always an unbreakable link between the city, adults and teenagers. However, with the fast pace of the Hong Kong metropolis, these three closely-related extremities are getting increasingly detached. For that reason, the aim of the Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation is to reconnect the city, adults and teenagers through this exhibition.”

About Through Our Eyes

The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation has been organizing the Through Our Eyes (TOE) photography education programme since 2005. The programme aims to help young people find and express their authentic voices through photography and creative writing. Participants receive a three-month photography course, directed by teaching artists, to learn basic photography skills and explore issues of identity, family, community, cultural heritage and the environment through photography and creative writing. They will be able to understand more about the world around them, and thus express their deepest and innermost feelings. Student works are shared with the community in various media and exhibitions, allowing teenagers’ voices to resonate, while at the same time inviting adults to learn more about teenage culture. Since 2008, the programme has gained the support of Shun Hing Education and Charity Fund, offering students free Panasonic LUMIX digital cameras with which they can capture moments that are meaningful to them.
