2008-06-06 The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation welcomes
The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Rebecca S. Chopp and Mr. Allan R. White as new members of the Board of Directors. Dr. Rebecca Chopp is the president of the Colgate University. She had spear-headed the development and implementation of a comprehensive strategic plan that expanded the university’s academic capacity by the largest amount in its history. Prior to her appointment at Colgate, Dr. Chopp served as dean and Titus Street Professor of Theology at the Yale Divinity School. A distinguished scholar of religion, her recent research and professional presentations have focused on changing structures and cultures of higher education, on the role of liberal arts in a democratic society and on religion and higher education. She has served on the Board of Trustees of the Carnegie Foundation for Teaching. Mr. Rick White is president and Chief Investment Officer of Minot Capital, LLC, a Boulder, Colorado-based investment firm providing global advisory services to institutional and family clients. A long-standing advocate of giving back to the community, Mr. White has served as a strategic advisor to a number of philanthropic and non-profit organizations in the U.S. He currently serves as a member of the Board of Managers of Haverford College; a member of the Investment Policy Committee of the University of Colorado Foundation; and the Vice Chairman and founding board member of the Landmine Survivors Network, a Washington, D.C.-based organization dedicated to helping land-mine victims reclaim their lives. The expertise in education and philanthropic advisory that the new members bring to the board is essential for the future strategic growth of the Foundation. Ms. Caroline Pfohl-Ho, President of the Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation, welcomes the new board members. “With Dr. Chopp and Mr. White, the Foundation establishes an even stronger board of versatile talent and commitment,” she said. “We are confident that the knowledge and experience that Dr. Chopp and Mr. White bring will help us make sound decisions and enhance our work in promoting Chinese arts and culture as well as Buddhist philosophy throughout the world”. About the Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation was established with two missions. The first is to promote Chinese arts and culture throughout the world, in particular through creative arts education; and the second is to advance the understanding of Buddhist teachings and explore their relevance to the contemporary world. The Foundation believes that educating the whole person contributes to the growth and health of a society; and the arts are fundamental in serving such development. Through arts appreciation and creation, people are able to discover and express themselves, develop better understanding of other people; and ultimately, bring about positive change in the world. The Foundation also believes that the insights of Buddhist philosophy can be a powerful vehicle for personal development and transformation, and can help people approach issues in their lives, in society and in the world with greater integrity and ingenuity.
In promoting creative arts education, the Foundation pioneered Through Our Eyes – an education programme that encourages young people to find and express their authentic voices through photography and creative writing. Over 1,000 students from 200 schools in Hong Kong and southern China have participated in this programme since 2005. Student work has been publicly shown at exhibitions such as the groundbreaking outdoor multimedia projection event, Wanchai in a Different Light. The Foundation also forms strategic partnerships with arts organizations to synergize expertise and resources to benefit participants within and outside the arts. The Foundation championed Asia’s first orchestral fellowship programme with the Hong Kong Philharmonic. This scheme provides professional training for young Chinese string musicians for one full orchestral season, transforming them from music graduates into professionals. The Foundation is currently in a partnership with the Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan to develop a new creative arts programme, which aims to help children express themselves through movement. The Foundation also supports events and education programmes that promote Chinese and Buddhist art in the major cultural capital of the world. Major exhibitions and education programs supported by the Foundation include Cai Guo-Qiang: I Want to Believe, the Solomon R. Guggenheim New York’s first solo retrospective dedicated to a Chinese artist; The Dragon’s Gift – The Sacred Art of Bhutan, a multi-year project to preserve and document the living Vajrayana Buddhist culture of Bhutan; and the Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Gallery, the first gallery of Buddhist sculpture in London’s Victoria and Albert Museum, which will open in April 2009. To learn more about the Robert H. N.
