The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation presents
“A Compassionate Eye – an exhibition of photographs by the Venerable Matthieu Ricard”,
renowned scholar, scientist, photographer,
best-selling author and Buddhist monk.

“According to Buddhist teachings, the Buddha-nature is present in every living being and the natural state of one’s mind, when it is not misconstrued by the power of negative thoughts, is perfection... in photography, my hope is to show the beauty of human nature."

The exhibition will benefit the Shechan Projects, which fund over 30 humanitarian and educational programmes in the Himalayas.

Matthieu Ricard, renowned scholar, scientist, photographer, best-selling author and Buddhist monk, will appear with his images at “A Compassionate Eye – an exhibition of photographs by the Venerable Matthieu Ricard” to be held at The Rotunda, Exchange Square, Central, Hong Kong from March 19 to 24, 2007. The exhibition is organised and sponsored by The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation, an independent philanthropic organisation dedicated to spreading the teachings of the Buddha, as well as to promoting Chinese arts and culture. All proceeds from sales of Matthieu Ricard’s limited autographed editions of photographs, posters, postcards, and his latest book Happiness, will be donated to the Shechen Projects, which fund over 30 humanitarian and educational projects initiated and managed by Matthieu Ricard, including clinics, schools, elderly homes, monasteries, art schools and bridges in Nepal, Tibet, India and Bhutan.

Matthieu Ricard will officiate at the opening ceremony to be held at 6:30 p.m. on March 21, 2007. He will be joined by Dechen Shak-Dagsay, a Tibetan singer who will sing songs from her album “Dewa Che, Universal Healing Power of Tibetans Mantras”.

Matthieu Ricard was born in France and was brought up among Paris’s intellectual elite. He studied photography and classical music and holds a doctorate in biochemistry from the prestigious Pasteur Institute. In 1972, he travelled to India, where he began his studies in Buddhism. During this trip he decided to forsake his academic career to devote himself to a spiritual path, and became a monk, a respected scholar of Tibetan texts and an artist. For three decades, Ricard has photographed the spiritual masters, landscapes and people of Tibet, Nepal, India and Bhutan. He has published several albums of photography including Journey to Enlightenment, Tibet – An Inner Journey, Monk Dancers of Tibet and Buddhist Himalayas. His work has been exhibited in various cities in Europe and the US including New York and Paris. He is a best-selling author and his book The Monk and the Philosopher (a dialogue with his father, the philosopher Jean-Francois Revel) has been translated into over 20 languages. He is also the author of The Quantum and the Lotus (reflecting his long-standing interest in science and Buddhism). His latest book on the meaning and fulfillment of happiness, Happiness, is listed by Time Asia as one of the best books in 2006.

Matthieu Ricard combines Buddhist wisdom with modern psychology to provide an accessible and relevant philosophy of life and practice for the 21st century. His bold and intimate photographs offer a rare insider’s view of a culture rich in color and imagery reflected in a skilled photographer’s eye. Henri Cartier-Bresson said of him: “Matthieu's spiritual life and his camera are one, from which these images spring – fleeting and eternal.”

As for Matthieu Ricard himself, “photography is a hymn to beauty. These photographs provide a glimpse of Tibetan Buddhist life. Portraits and landscapes can lead you from an understanding of outer beauty to the inner beauty of spiritual awakening and the boundless human qualities that accompany it, as the warmth and light of rays naturally accompany the sun.”

Ms. Caroline Pfohl-Ho, President of The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation, “The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation is delighted to sponsor, organise and curate ‘A Compassionate Eye’ as well as Matthieu’s affiliated events at the University of Hong Kong. We hope that the Hong Kong community will be touched and inspired by Matthieu’s truly compassionate eye, and will help him to further his humanitarian work.
