Matthieu Ricard, renowned scholar, scientist, photographer, best-selling author and Buddhist monk, describes achieving durable happiness as a way of being as a skill: “It requires sustained effort in training the mind and developing a set of human qualities, such as inner peace, mindfulness and altruistic love.” The latter is being well demonstrated at the “A Compassionate Eye – an exhibition of photographs by the Venerable Matthieu Ricard”, organised and sponsored by The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation, in support of the Shechen Projects which fund over 30 humanitarian and educational projects initiated and managed by Matthieu Ricard, including clinics, schools, elderly homes, hospice care, monasteries, art schools and bridges in China, Nepal, Tibet, India and Bhutan. The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation, whose mission is to foster and support Chinese arts and culture, as well as to promote deeper understanding of the teachings of the Buddha, has invited the Venerable Matthieu Ricard to officiate at the opening ceremony of “A Compassionate Eye – an exhibition of photographs by the Venerable Matthieu Ricard” held at the exhibition venue at The Rotunda, Exchange Square on March 21, 2007. In the midst of Matthieu Ricard’s appealing work, the guests received a warm welcome from Ms. Caroline Pfohl-Ho, President of The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation who was most thankful to the guests and the Hong Kong community for their benevolence and support. Then the Venerable Matthieu Ricard was invited to greet the guests, saying, “According to Buddhist teachings, the Buddha-nature is present in every living being and the natural state of one’s mind, when it is not misconstrued by the power of negative thoughts, is perfection… In photography, my hope is to show the beauty of human nature.” The appearance of this world renowned figure and well respected monk received joyous and ardent applause. The guests were then invited to enjoy a singing performance by renowned Tibetan singer, Dechen Shak-Dagsay, accompanied by flute accompaniment by Mr. Tam Po Shek of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. Ms. Caroline Pfohl-Ho, President of The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation, said at the opening, “’A Compassionate Eye – an exhibition of photographs by the Venerable Matthieu Ricard’ presents the beauty of human nature, not only through the compassionate eye of Matthieu Ricard but also through the benevolent support granted by the Hong Kong community. Since the commencement of this exhibition two days ago, many of the forty-one limited edition photographs have been sold in support of the Shechen Projects. As the organiser, sponsor and curator of this exhibition, The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere thanks to the donors and supporters of this event. Your benevolence has been greatly treasured. With limited overhead expenses of only 2%, 98% of the funds go directly to the projects in the field, and benefit children, the sick, the poor and the elderly.” Caroline hopes that by staging this charitable exhibition, more people of the Hong Kong community will be touched and inspired by Matthieu’s truly compassionate eye, and will help him to further his humanitarian work. The exhibition at the Rotunda will end on March 24. For those who are interested in making any purchase or donation after the exhibition, please contact The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation at 2232 0009 before April 15, 2007.
